East Main Street Bridge over CSX Trans/Amtrak Bridge Rehabilitation

Overview

Location:
Rochester, NY
Client:
City of Rochester
Quick Facts:

Scope: Rehabilitation of bridge spanning active CSX and Amtrak rail lines

Focus: Safety, durability, and multimodal connections

Structure:  The bridge carries a four-lane reinforced composite concrete deck with two concrete sidewalks and a center median. The 76 ft. span steel multi-girder framing is constructed of weathering steel and is supported by reinforced concrete cantilever abutments and u-walls.

The East Main Street Bridge is a critical link between downtown Rochester and surrounding neighborhoods, carrying significant daily traffic over one of the region’s busiest rail corridors. Aging infrastructure and deterioration in the deck, sidewalks, and structural elements required a strategic, cost-effective rehabilitation approach. Fisher Associates applied detailed inspection and non-destructive testing methods to inform targeted design solutions, including deck reconstruction, sidewalk and parapet replacement, and joint elimination to reduce long-term maintenance. Construction was staged to maintain traffic flow, resulting in a safer, more resilient structure that enhances connectivity and supports continued mobility.
