High Falls Gorge Wall – 3D Laser Scanning Project

Overview

Location:
Rochester, NY
Client:
City of Rochester
Quick Facts:

3D laser scan created a high-resolution baseline model for long-term rock wall monitoring

Monthly precise leveling surveys conducted over one year to track structural settlement

Captured embedded anchor bolts to measure potential subsurface rock movement

To support long-term stability assessment at High Falls Gorge, Fisher Associates performed advanced 3D laser scanning to develop a detailed surface model of the rock wall. This high-resolution dataset established a precise baseline for an ongoing monitoring program focused on identifying rock face deterioration and potential structural movement. The scan captured critical features, including existing anchor bolts embedded within the rock, allowing for accurate comparison over time. Using established control points and survey baselines, future scans can quantify changes and deterioration rates. In addition, Fisher conducted monthly precise leveling surveys over the course of a year to monitor potential settlement of the structure located above the gorge, ensuring early detection of movement and supporting proactive maintenance strategies.
