Project Story

Fisher Associates traffic expertise is widely recognized, as demonstrated by our sole source designation by the NYSDOT to provide real-time, 4D traffic and visual simulations for the reconstruction of the I-590 and Winton Road Interchange.

The NYSDOT assessed three feasible design alternatives for the interchange and Winton Road corridor. Design alternatives included the I-590 interchange ramp relocations, triple left turn-off ramps, the addition of Senator Keating Boulevard, and six multi-jurisdictional signal-controlled intersections.

Fisher Associates worked closely with the NYSDOT Region 4 Planning and Programming Group, first to provide traffic volume forecasts and capacity analyses that evaluated the potential impacts and benefits associated with each design alternative. Complex simulations were provided for alternatives that included a triple left exit ramp and variations of partial cloverleaf interchanges. The final alternative involved an innovative Diverging Diamond Interchange, one of the first applications in the United States. The project was recognized by ITE and ACEC for transportation project achievement and innovative 4D virtual modeling technology for design optimization and public involvement.
