The Milne Library Plaza renovation project aimed to enhance SUNY Oneonta’s campus by revitalizing a key quad space connecting the original core campus with the expanded area to the west. Fisher Associates focused on creating a cohesive design that improved the physical space, strengthened the connection between historical and contemporary elements, and provided a central gathering place for students.

Fisher led the conceptual design, cost estimates, detailed design, and construction documentation for the Milne Library Plaza renovation. The primary goal was to establish a clear axis for pedestrian traffic and design a central hub for student activities, bridging old and new campus sections.

The design includes a lowered formal green quad space surrounded by hardscape elements that blend with the library’s architecture, extending its functionality outdoors. Strategic placement of flexible outdoor seating encourages social interactions and study sessions, enhancing the plaza’s usability as an academic and social space.

A notable feature is the at-grade water feature with fountain jets, serving as a splash pad in warmer months and transforming into an ice skating rink in winter. The renovated plaza represents Fisher’s expertise in creating multifunctional and inclusive outdoor spaces that contribute to a vibrant campus community.
